missing home :-( / looking after horses :-)

Now that i am in Thurso College im hardly ever at home. So i dont get to see my horses half as much as i used to, but the holidays are coming up which i am very pleased about i can go and spend as much time with them as i can. Missing them loads, Frankie is also coming home so all the others will be happy to see him aswell.
Since i have been away soo much i think i should be getting everyone a treat for christmas, am sure they will all be needing somthing anyway keeping horses is not an easy or cheap job.
If your thinking about buying a horse/pony you should consider what all you need and how much its going to cost as its continuously putting money out all the time for vets bills, farrier, feed, rugs, insurance and new equipment and tack every so often i am allways skint. A lot of people just think that all you need is a field and to buy the horse and they are very wrong, horses also need alot of attention and effort, thats where i am lucky as i may not be at home all the time but my auntie and uncle keep my horses along with there own so all of them get the attention they need.
In the winter horses need alot more attention as its getting colder so more rugs are needed ,alot more feed is used aswell with you having to provide alot of hay too.
Lokking after horses is a really big job to do but people who have them will know that it is a very rewarding job and i wouldent change it for the world and thats why i have chosen to study it so i can make my prospects of a career in this field better.

>>>to the right is Frankie and Hayley
FUNTIME FRANKIE is the name, he's my friend Hayleys horse and also stays at our yard sometimes, hes just a baby at only 4 years old. D.O.B 1st april 2002. He's 15hh piebald cob x, and absoulutely gorgeous, such a sweety who makes everyone laugh when he does his cheeky manovers but when you go to give him a row he gives kisses how could you possibly stay angry?.
Putting that all aside he is great to ride, has lovely paces and very bold jump, very high expectations of him. Hayley bought Frankie when he was three and a half and broke him on her own with a little help from her auntie.
At the moment he's at college with us in Thurso, we attend the North Highland college doing equestrian and buisness studies so Frankie was allowed to come stay at the college yard so that he could be used for everyone to learn to ride on, as he's so quiet natured he's a great confidence giver but he has his moments and likes to winde hayley up at times like dragging her through doors.
After Christmas he may be coming home due to the fact that people take advantage of Frankies gentelness and were caught climbing onto his back from the ground without a saddle or bridle, taking pictures and videos. Hayley was really upset as the girl doing it was too big for him and Frankie has had previous back problems, and remembering he is only 4 he will still be developing.
Well thats all about Frankie for now. x

A bIt aBoUt tHe sTuD.

My uncle Euan and his fiancee run the stud just outside beauly on the muir of ord straight, they at the moment have the two stallions Fun and Maddok, both welsh ponies as the stud we have mainally consists of welsh ponies altho there is a few others as you can see in my other posts. We use are stallions on our own mares to produce high quality foals, which we will either keep and break or sell as foals, but also welcome other mares from all around the country to come and visit to be covered.
As Natalie is a riding instructor she likes to keep some of the best foals to break and school to then sell ready to be worked and shown although these will be more expensive then they are allways very well schooled and should be suitable for adults and children to work with although all horses and ponies have different temperaments not all will be suitable for a child wihh may not have the experience to handle them.
When visiting mares come to stay there are usually at ours for around three weeks so that they can either run with the stallion or be covered by him every about twice but maybe more so we can be sure the mare is in foal, could not come back into season after the three weeks. T o do this it will be quite expensive as you would have to pay for the keeping of the mare while its staying with us and then the fee for the mare to be covered wich will be around £300 approx.

Jasmine
Barkway Swansong
Was my other pony which i got to compete on as polly was getting old and was well in need of retirement. Jasmine was also a welsh pony, liver chestnut 12.2hh mare she was a lovely pony although she had her moments. After we got her i couldn't wait to get on her, but then when i tied there was something not right as she seemed to be frightened as i tried to mount and when i did she was clearly in pain. We then got the chiropractor out to see her and her hip was out of place and some of her back bones were to, he managed to fix it but it became a regular thing and every time we would notice that there was something wrong usually resulted in me getting thrown off, this gave my confidence a real knock after everything polly had given me. So we then decided to take her out of work and leave her as a brood mare, we bred 2 foals from her and then she was sold to carry on producing top quality foals.

Possible newcomer

Dove

Dove is a highland x thoroughbred mare, dun in colour with a black and cream mane and tail. She is 15.2hh and 12 years old, her owner who has had her since she was a foal has worked with here all her life but now has small children and hasn't got enough time to do anything with her, her children are also too small to ride her. The lady offered her to natalie my auntie for me as i am at thurso college doing equestrian studies and at the moment haven't got my own horse to practise on for my bhs exams, Dove is a very quiet well mannered horse whom has competed in many shows and pony club games and rallies so would be perfect for giving confidence to any rider. At the moment were considering whether to take her or not as she would have to come to college with me in thurso to stay at the yard that we learn on but at present the yard is full and it would be unfair to be left at home. Maybe at thew start of the Christmas holidays would be the best time to take her on as then i am at home to look after her and get her back into work.

Glenlichd stud

Fun
Glenlichd funfair
Is a stallion that my uncle owns , we bred him and have him standing at stud to create our glenlichd line of welsh ponies, although people can also pay to have there mares covered by him at our yard.
He is a top class pony, dark bay 13.2hh welsh section b pony. he has won so much over the years and of course this summer has been champion many times competing at even the royal highland show and he is only 4 years old. He is now been broken just over the last month or so by Natalie.

Sparkle
Howview Fairysparle
This is the mother of fun and is the main brood mare at the yard producing almost a foal every year, shes a beautiful mare also dark bay with a white blaze on her face n two white socks, she stands at at 12.2hh and is also a welsh section b pony. Her foals will not be by fun clearly but to another welsh b champion stallion. All foals are of the same high class and will do well, they would make perfect childs show ponies.

Mindi
Is an older mare we have who used to be the main brood mare, the one we started the stud with who is now having a rest, shes a palomino mare of only 11.2hh. She produced many good foals that have won all round the country such as glenlichd smartie and glenlichd spitfire. Shes a cheeky little mare and has alot of personality.

Polly
Ceanin Catrin
Is my favorite of them all, a brilliant little grey 12.2hh mare also a welsh section b. She was my own 1st pony and she was a great confidence giver and would never put a foot wrong. Has done all pony club activities and general riding school work a complete schoolmaster. she also was a cheeky little mare but the perfect childs pony loved all attention and of course treats. She sadly died in October at 35 years old, shes one that will never be forgotten
.

Jess

This is another one of the crew, she was given to my uncle to look after when her owner died, Fiona was a good friend of Euan's and was always at the shows with us and Euan had helped her for many years and had known Jess for most of her life and was then left to him when Fiona suddenly passed away. Jess is a grey highland mare, who stands at 14.2hh a mare that will never leave us as that what Fiona wanted.
She is like a tank, bum like a peach and is so cheeky, has done alot of showing as she is a stunning mare and won lots all around the highlands, she may be a bit lazy in warm up but when she gets going you wont stop her and she loves to jump, like a rocket when shes jumping you can feel the power from her back end.
One memory i have of a show with Jess is, we were at the black isle show and were sitting at the horse lorry waiting for Fiona's husband to come back with some burgers for our lunch, he wasn't far away from the lorry when Jess must have smelt the food, she about turned broke the lead rope and started running after him, the size of Jess is enough to frighten anyone he dropped the burgers and ran. Jess then stopped and munched the burgers so much for my lunch.
